SAVED: Smoke & Vape Detector

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Designed a networked smoke and vape detection system using VOC sensing and Wi-Fi connectivity to deliver real-time alerts to administrators, enabling faster and more reliable intervention in indoor school environments.

MY CONTRIBUTIONS

  • 01

Designed and built the sensor enclosure, optimizing form factor and mounting for bathroom deployment

  • 02

Developed the embedded electronics and firmware using an ESP8266 for real-time sensing and communication

  • 03

Integrated VOC sensor data with a cloud-based notification pipeline

  • 04

Implemented a mobile alert system via Blynk, enabling instant notifications to multiple administrators

  • 05

Validated continuous, second-level data updates to ensure responsiveness and reliability

  • 06

Owned end-to-end system integration, from hardware assembly to app-level alerts

RESULTS

  • Accurate, real-time detection of smoke and vape emissions

  • Instant administrator notification upon detection

  • Low-cost, scalable monitoring concept for school-wide deployment
